How to Change the Wheel on a Hand Held Grinder

While changing the wheel on your hand held grinder does not require a degree, I have witnessed this being done wrong numerous of times. With safety and efficiency in mind, this is a quick and painless process. Care should always be used; it is easy to get hurt.

Instructions

1. 

   Unplug the grinder. Whenever you work on anything electrical, make sure there is no power going to the appliance or tool. These grinders spin very fast. The last thing you want is for it to power on when you are taking the wheel off.

2. 

   Activate the wheel lock device, which is present on most grinders. On this model, it is a button on the backside of it that locks the wheel in place, preventing it from spinning, so torque can be applied to the wheel for removal.

3. 

   Use the tool to unscrew the round nut that locks the wheel on. In this instance, it is a two-pronged, forked tool that fits into the actual round nut. Remember to keep the wheel locked with the lockout device, or the wheel will just spin.

4. 

   Remove the nut that locks the wheel on, and then remove the actual grinding or cutoff wheel, as shown in the article's main photograph. Putting a new wheel on and securing it in the grinder by following these steps in reverse.
