Things You'll Need:
- a computer
- Internet access
- a professional e-mail address
-
Step 1
Have a professional email address. This is crucial. A client or editor may not respond to a personal email address. (I go into greater detail about this in the related article listed at the end of this article titled: How to Get Repeat Assignments from Editors and Clients.)
-
Step 2
Use a creative email subject line. Instead of simply responding to the ad as Re: Writer Wanted, why not come up with a flashy title like "Creative Writer Available" or "Qualified Writer Available"?
-
Step 3
In the body of your email be sure to be professional. Think business letter - not casual friend chat. If there isn't a name in the ad, it's better to just leave that out. Start out with something like: (Insert name) here. I'm a freelance writer with publishing credits in a variety of publications. Something like that.
-
Step 4
Include a link to your Web site, portfolio and any work you've done that would be relevant. Don't list every single thing you've ever done. Be creative, brief, kind, and make sure to check your spelling.
-
Step 5
Include somewhere in the email where you found the freelance writing jobs ad. People love to know which advertising venues work best.
-
Step 6
Add a signature at the bottom of your email. Use your title, name, Web site address, etc.
-
Step 7
You have one chance to make a last impression, so give it all you've got. Good luck!
