How to Enjoy a Trip to Lake George, New York
Lake George, New York, is a popular destination for East Coast vacationers. The name refers to both the 32-mile-long lake and Lake George Village, a quiet, small town that bustles with visitors during the summer months. Only a few hours from New York City, the Lake George area attracts city dwellers looking for a taste of nature and visitors who enjoy the many water activities available in the area. Accommodations are scattered throughout the area, but most are concentrated in the Lake George Village, Diamond Point and Bolton Landing areas.

Visit the beach. Although some beaches along the lake are private, you'll find several public beaches in Lake George Village. Shepard's Park Beach, Million Dollar Beach and Usher Park beach offer shallow swimming areas, sandy beaches and free admission, although visitors must pay for parking at Million Dollar Beach. All of these beaches are protected by lifeguards during the summer.

Take in some history. Fort William Henry, located south of Lake George Village, played a part in both the Seven Years War and the French and Indian War. Tours are conducted on an hourly basis in the spring through fall, and demonstrations of musket and cannon firing are held daily.

Spend the day exploring Lake George Village. The area offers plenty of unique shops and restaurants that will appeal to visitors of all ages. The Adirondack Winery offers a full-service store and wine tastings at its location in the heart of Lake George Village. For the bargain hunters, there are several outlet stores just outside of Lake George Village.

Go para-sailing and view the lake from a new vantage point. You'll fly 300 feet above the lake on your own para-sail provided by Parasailing Adventures. Participants can choose to take the 10-minute trip alone or with another person. Group rates apply for groups of 15 or more.

Enjoy a leisurely afternoon cruising Lake George. Take a sightseeing cruise on the 150-passenger Horicon. In addition to daylight cruises, the Horicon offers a fireworks cruise on Thursday evenings and moonlight cruises on Friday and Saturday evenings. If you would like to combine a tour with a meal, try a lunch or dinner cruise on the Adirondac.

Visit a water park. Enchanted Forest/Water Safari and Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Water Park offer slides, wave pools and water play areas for children and adults. Enchanted Forest/Water Safari also offers amusement park rides.

Tips & Warnings
If you'll be visiting Lake George with children, try your hand at one of the many miniature golf courses in the area. Summer visitors will find weekly concerts featuring contemporary music at Shepard Park. Shepard Park is also home to the annual Jazz Weekend held in September.
