Use a Number Maze By Twos

Skip counting is an important concept for kids to learn in either first or second grade. I introduce the concept of skip counting during my basketball thematic unit in which the kids play basketball in class and keep score by twos. This is a great way to reinforce this concept on paper. I have also created a number maze that counts by twos--which is part of my "Yummy Math" program--and uses Fruit Loops! Here is how.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay out tons of Fruit Loops on the table for the kids.

  2. Step 2

Have the kids lay the Fruit Loops on the numbers starting at 2 and ending at 100, while counting by twos. You can create this simple grid using any drawing program such as Appleworks or Microsoft Works.

  3. Step 3

Reduce the size of the handout each time you do this, so that it becomes a harder fine motor activity and also saves paper.

  4. Step 4

Eventually have the kids color the boxes instead of placing Fruit Loops on them. This is a great fine motor activity for them.

  5. Step 5

Have the kids also color in the boxes in an AB pattern, so that they will also learn patterning.
