Install a networked Printer in Windows XP

In this ehow article, I will explain how to install a printer in a windows environment. When you buy a new printer, simply plugging from you printer to your PC will not complete the job. In order to print successfully, you will have to install the printers software or driver in order give your computer instructions how to print to your printer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to your printer manufacturers website and download driver for your specific model of printer.

For HP, you go to http://www.hp.com/#Support

For Dell, you go to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

  2. Step 2

Once you have the driver, go to windows printers folder and click ADD A PRINTER.

  3. Step 3

In wizard click NEXT and then choose LOCAL PRINTER ATTACHED TO THIS COMPUTER option and UNCHECK the option to automatically detect and install plug and play printer.

  4. Step 4

Click next, then click CREATE A NEW PORT and choose STANDARD TCP/IP PORT from drop down list. Click NEXT

  5. Step 5

Click NEXT and choose a name for your printer port (could be called anything) and specify what the IP of your printer is (your printers IP is the local network address that should have already been assigned to your printer. ex: 192.168.1.75)

  6. Step 6

Click NEXT and you will have a database of printers to choose from, but we are not going to choose one of these printers. Instead, choose the option that says HAVE DISK.

  7. Step 7

Click Browse and find the driver you downloaded from step 1. Click next and choose your printer model from the options and click next to finish wizard.
