An aluminum awning can keep a home cool during the summer if used on a window or patio. An aluminum awning adds elegance to a home and is relatively easy to build. These directions will focus on building an awning for windows.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Wall brackets
  • Saw
  • Galvanized screws
  • Aluminum
  1. Step 1

Measure the size of the window. Determine how big you will want the awning. Be sure to add at least 2 inches on each side of the window in order to get the correct coverage.

  2. Step 2

Attach wall brackets with fasteners. This will be placed on each side of the window on the top where the awning will be braced from. The width between the brackets will rely on the measurement of the window. Use a level to make sure that the brackets are level. This will ensure that the awning will be level.

  3. Step 3

Put together the aluminum awning frame. Cut seven pieces of 4-foot long pieces of aluminum with a saw. Three pieces will go on the top vertically while two pieces will go on each side horizontally. Measure how thick you will need each piece since it will depend on the size of the windows.

  4. Step 4

Connect aluminum pieces together. Use galvanized screws because they don't rust. Place horizontal pieces slightly onto the next piece and drill four screws into them to connect them. Take the three vertical pieces and lay them about 1/2-inch onto the piece next to it. Drill in the screws. Then connect the sides by placing the top side pieces a 1/2-inch onto the outside of the vertical pieces. Drill the six screws into these pieces to connect them.

  5. Step 5

Attach the aluminum awning to top of window. This is where you will use the brackets. Drill a screw from the bottom of the bracket into the side of the awning. Drill each top end of the aluminum awning into the top of the bracket.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can connect material over the aluminum if you want a certain color, but after time it will fade and rip.
