Step 1
Apply your other makeup, including eyeshadow. Don't put your mascara on yet, but eyeliner looks best on top of eyeshadow, rather than underneath. If you're new to this, use a non-waterproof eyeliner and have lots of makeup remover handy--it's ok to mess up!
-
Step 2
Keep your eye open. Honestly, I learned to do it the other way (with eyes closed) and I find this much easier.
-
Step 3
Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and put the tip behind your lashes at the highest point of your eye.
-
Step 4
Using your eyelashes as a barrier, sweep down to the outer corner of your eye along your lashes.
-
Step 5
Holding the brush straight, go very lightly from the inside corner of your eye to the center, again using your lashes to guide you. It's ok if you smother them with eyeliner; they're getting mascara in a second.
-
Step 6
If you make the line too wide, remove and reapply. Keep going until to get it!
-
Step 7
Let your eyeliner dry for a hard line before applying your mascara.
