Emergencies can strike with very little warning and have devastating consequences for those not prepared. Many people do not have emergency survival kits, and they can be expensive to buy. If you know a loved one is unprepared, you can make emergency survival kits as an inexpensive and thoughtful gift. In this article, we will learn how to put together basic emergency survival kits to be given as gifts.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a large waterproof box for your emergency survival kits. Determine how many people you will be gathering supplies for in the emergency survival kits. Each person will need roughly a gallon of water per day for cooking, drinking, and personal hygiene. Most emergency survival kits are geared for three days of survival. If making just a basic emergency survival kit, a day or two will be okay. You can buy jugs of water that will not go bad for this purpose. Place jugs of water in the bottom of your emergency survival kits, as it will be the heaviest object and will crush other survival objects.

  2. Step 2

Gather nonperishable foods for your emergency survival kits. Packages of rice, pasta, dried beans, nuts, cans of fruits and vegetables, and cans of tuna or other meats are all good for this purpose. Place foods in a smaller box inside your emergency survival kits, or inside ziploc bags to keep them together. Include a small can opener if using cans of foods.

  3. Step 3

Get a medium sized pot for cooking or sanitizing water. You will also need to have a way in your emergency survival kit to cook food. A small propane stove geared for backpacking is a nice addition. Sterno cans of fuel are excellent choices, and there is even small stoves that fold up to use sternos in. Don't forget a few paper plates, utensils, and cups in your emergency survival kits, they can be burned for heat in an emergency situation.

  4. Step 4

Your emergency survival kits will also need a first aid kit, a very basic kit will do. You can put one together with bandaids, instant ice packs, tweezers, gauze and tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, travel sizes of ibuprofin, and digestive aids. Keep those items separate in your emergency survival kits in a small case or ziploc bag.

  5. Step 5

On the top of your emergency survival kits, add a warm blanket or two, plus a tarp, some rope and duct tape. Squeeze in a couple of flashlights with batteries, waterproof matches, and firestarters. Giving a gift of emergency survival kits can help ensure your loved ones are prepared in the event of an emergency.
