The Craigslist site is simple, but it's a powerful tool for selling
Craigslist.com

On Friday I placed an ad, at no cost to me, on Craigslist.org. Within 48 hours my item had been picked up and I had cash in my hand! If you have items around your home that you no longer want, or need, you too can sell them on Craigslist quickly!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Items to sell
  • Digital Camera (optional)
  1. Step 1

First, go to http://www.Craigslist.org and click on your state and then the city you will be selling the item in.

  2. Step 2

On the top left-hand sidebar, click on "post to classifieds."

  3. Step 3

Select "for sale" as the type of listing you are placing and then choose the category you want your ad placed in. (I.E. - I chose "furniture - by owner" for my sofa and loveseat.) This step is important because people will click on the category to see the listed items. If you are selling an office chair and list it under electronics, it may never get looked at. So choose wisely.

  4. Step 4
Your description should be detailed describing size, color, condition, etc.

Your description should be detailed describing size, color, condition, etc.

This screen is where you will create your posting. In the title box you want to be clear and descriptive, but keep it short. (My title was "Forest Green Couch & Loveseat.") Then enter the dollar amount you want for the item. (Be reasonable! Just because you think your grandmother's hutch is worth $1000, that doesn't mean it is. Check other listings and see what similar items are selling for. Don't undersell yourself, but remember, if you want it to go fast it needs to be a bargain for the customer.) Enter your location. Now you need to write a description. (This is where you need to go into detail. Tell people why you are selling the item. Does it work? Explain size, color, age, etc. Is there a hole in the back of the item? Is it scratched? Be honest. If you want to give people the option of contacting you by phone, add your number here.) Enter your email address and confirm it. (This is how almost everyone contacted me, so be sure it's correct and one you check frequently.) Finally, I recommend that you do not check the box to be contacted about other services or you'll end up with a ton of spam. You can now click "confirm," if you don't want to add pictures. If you do, move on to step 5.

  5. Step 5

Before clicking the "confirm" button, you should seriously consider adding a photo or two. (This step is optional, but I highly recommend it! The person who purchased my furniture said that my photos were what made them drive the distance to come look at my item.) With your camera on the smallest resolution, take a couple photos of the item from different angles. Try to get only the item in the photo. Save the photos to your computer. On the Craigslist form click "Add/Edit Images, " and find the file you saved them in. A green circle will appear on the post page and when you click "confirm" the photos will be uploaded to your ad.

  6. Step 6
You must confirm your ad through the email link for it to become active

You must confirm your ad through the email link for it to become active

Your ad is now ready but there is one last, but very important, step. You will be sent an email, and to make your ad live, you must click on the link in the email. You will then be shown your ad and you can confirm that you want to post it.

  7. Step 7

Check your email and voicemail frequently. My entire transaction was done through a series of emails. If I hadn't checked it regularly, I might not have sold it as quickly.

Tips & Warnings
  • People are visual and by adding a photo they will be able to emotionally connect with the item you are trying to sell. But make sure your photos are up-to-date, and they represent the item correctly. (Lighting can change the color of an item in a photo.)
  • Be aware that there are possible scammers hoping to defraud someone through schemes involving counterfeit cashier's checks and/or wire transfers. A truly interested individual will, most likely, live in the same area, or within a reasonable distant. Never give out personal information such as checking account numbers.

on 12/22/2008 I have tried to sell things on CL before. For some reason, they never sell. But, I do have a Bed in a Bag I really want to sell. It is almost brand new and is really cute. I will sell of for half the price I purchased it for.

5 stars...
