How to Travel to Italy

If you are planning a trip to Italy you have several options when it comes to traveling there. If you are going to be traveling from Europe, you have more travel options to get to Italy than you do if you will be traveling from another continent, like North America. Even then, you can use a combination of different methods to travel to Italy if you do not want to just take a flight straight to Italy.

      Travel by air. There are several airports throughout Italy that you can fly into. Popular international airports are Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome, Venice Marco Polo Airport in Venice, Malpensa Airport in Milan, Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna and Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence.

      Travel by automobile. If you are traveling in Europe by car, you can actually drive the car to Italy. If you are renting the car, be sure to check with the car rental agency if you can drive the car across the border, as there may be restrictions. From France, you will probably enter on N205 / E25. From Switzerland, you will probably enter on A2 / E35. From Austria, you will probably enter on A2.

      Travel by train. Purchase tickets through Rail Europe (see Resources) to travel by train to Italy. Rail passes can be bought for as far away as the United Kingdom that include transfers to get you to Italy.

      Travel by boat. Depending on where you will be traveling from, you can travel to Italy by ferry or on a cruise. Ferries can be booked for as far away as Barcelona, Spain. Ferry ports can be found on aferry.to (see Resources). To book a cruise to Italy, look for a Mediterranean cruise that goes to Italy, such as the ones offered on Friendly Planet (see Resources).

      Travel by a combination of methods. For example, you could fly from Dublin, Ireland, to Paris, France, and then take a train from Paris to Italy. Or, you could fly into Geneva, Switzerland, and rent a car to drive into Italy.
