Pet rocks are not for everyone. It takes a special person to properly care for this special pet. Not only will you have physically care for your pet rock, you must meet all the emotional needs of your pet rock as well. Follow these guidelines and you will be better prepared to care for your pet rock.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare your home for a pet rock. Be sure to have all the necessities that pet rocks require. Your pet rock will need a comfy bed, food and water, toys, and clothing. Most of these you will have to make yourself. It is possible to find toys and clothing in stores, but be careful that these items are the right size for your pet rock.

  2. Step 2

Adopt your pet rock from a shelter, rescue or bring a homeless pet rock home with you. Please do not buy a pet rock. Do your part to end the pet rock over-population problem. There are so many lonely and sad pet rocks waiting for good homes. Many are in these shelters and rescues because their previous owners did not know how to care for them.

  3. Step 3

Name your pet rock. Remember that pet rocks are sensitive and will grow to resent a name that can not be taken seriously. Be sure that any name you are considering will pass the “Supreme Court Test.” If the name is dignified enough to sound right for the Supreme Court, it should be okay for your pet rock. Names like “Spike” and “LuLu” will not pass this test.

  4. Step 4

Bring your pet rock home. On the way home, spend time reassuring your new pet rock that everything will be okay. This is a stressful time for a pet rock. In fact, you pet rock may have “accidents” during this time. Be gentle and understanding. Your pet rock will need time to adjust to his or her new home. This is especially true if you have adopted your pet rock from a shelter or rescue. You have no idea the neglect and abuse your pet rock may have endured before coming to you.

  5. Step 5

Slowly introduce your pet rock to your friends. Pet rocks can be nervous around new people, so be sure to explain this to your friends. Over time, your pet rock will become friendly with those you invite into your home. Never guilt a pet rock into be more sociable. This can cause emotional scars that may never heal.

  6. Step 6

Spend time with your pet rock. Talk to your pet rock. They are very curious and love to learn new things. Read any and every book you can to your pet rock. Pet rocks have vivid imaginations and loves whimsy. Tell your pet rock stories that you make up yourself. Encourage your pet rock to contribute their ideas to those stories. Hold your pet rock. Rock your pet rock. Let your pet rock know it is the most important part of your life. Treat it like a member of your family. Remember, your pet rock is a member of your family.

  7. Step 7

Train your pet rock. Because pet rocks are extremely sensitive, you must be both firm and gentle with your pet rock. Pet rocks responds well to lots of praise and attention. Catch your pet rock doing something right and let him or her know how proud you are to have such a wonder pet rock in your life.
