how to kill fleas and other pests without using harmful chemicals

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Food grade diatomaceous earth
  1. Step 1

Make sure your pet is healthy. It is important to feed them a healthy balanced meal and maintain cleanliness of your pet's skin and fur. Fleas love unhealthy pets.

  2. Step 2

Purchase diatomaceous earth (or DE) from a feed store. Rub the DE powder into the fur of your dog or cat, keeping in mind the most common flea loved areas like around the tail and on the lower back. Make sure to treat your other cats and dogs, even those who don't appear to have fleas. DE will not hurt your pets, and can even be added to their food to help kill tape worms.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum your carpets and follow with a light sprinkle of diatomaceous earth. Also use in a dry yard, on pet beds and around your furniture.

  4. Step 4

Wash any linens your pets have been on or near to ensure you are getting rid of the eggs. Do this the day of sprinkling!

  5. Step 5

The diatomaceous earth will take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours to completely kill the fleas and ticks on your pets. You can check your pets with a flea comb to determine if they need more time to do the job. Once this time is up give your pets a warm bath to wash away the pests and vacuum your carpet for any remaining eggs and dead flea bodies. Do this once a month in flea season for extra prevention.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that your DE is food grade ONLY and not pool grade as that is chemically treated and is toxic if ingested.
