How to Avoid Toxoplasmosis During Pregnancy
Toxoplasmosis is a serious but rare blood infection caused by a parasite that can be contracted through cat feces, rare and infected meat, or even contaminated fruits and vegetables. Unborn babies who are exposed to toxoplasmosis may suffer with premature birth, jaundice, mental retardation, convulsions and other serious disorders. Toxoplasmosis can be avoided by taking the following precautions.
Instructions
-
-
1
Stay away from raw and uncooked meats.
-
2
If you have a cat, find someone else to change the litter box. Cats can carry the parasite in their feces, which can then infect you if you are handling it. If you don't have anyone else to change the litter for you, wear gloves, a mask and wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap after changing the litter box.

3
If you don't have a cat, don't get one during pregnancy. You are more susceptible to getting toxoplasmosis from a new cat than from one you have had for years.
-
4
Don't garden in soil that is used by cats. Cats often use garden soil as a litter box and you may come in contact with feces here. When gardening, you should always wear protective gloves.
-
5
As a precaution, always wash your hands after touching your animals.
-
6
Keep your cat indoors as much as possible and never feed your cat raw or uncooked meat. This will limit his exposure to the parasite.

Tips & Warnings
If you eat at a restaurant, make sure to get your meat cooked well-done.
Practice good hygiene at all times.
Fever and fatigue are two common symptoms of toxoplasmosis. If you notice either of these and think you may have been exposed to the parasite, call your doctor immediately.
