Things You'll Need:
- Newt
- Tank
- Gravel
- Hiding Places- hollow log,rocks,etc..
- Tank Light
- Crickets
-
Step 1
The first thing you are going to want to do is set up your tank. You will want a decent size tank, about 10 gallons. You can now dump your gravel or rocks in. You want a smooth gravel, nothing that is going to be rough on their bellies.
-
Step 2
Next you will want some kind of platform, for them to crawl onto, to get out of the water. Newts are air breathers. They need water and air, so you need to have something for them to get out of the water on. It could be a large rock or a log, or a floating piece of wood.
-
Step 3
They also like places to hide so a hollow log or something with an overhang is good too.
-
Step 4
Next you can add your water. You will want a good 3 or 4 inches of water for them to swim in. Newts like temperatures on the cooler side, around 70F or even 68F. If you have your room at a normal temperature they should be fine though.
-
Step 5
Now you can add your Newts. You will want to feed them some crickets or bloodworms every few days. They do not need to eat everyday. You can clean the tank once a week, or even once every two weeks if you have a filtration system in your tank.
-
Step 6
Enjoy your Newt!!

on 7/17/2009 avilev, I've had mine for about 10-11 years now and I have to say they aren't active little buggers..lol! They tend to just chill out under a rock. I also have a pellet that I feed mine, I found it at Petsmart..it's a salamander/newt pellet. They like the pellet, but they still prefer the live crickets to anything..lol! They are a very hardy little creature. I once read somewhere about a guy's newt that got out and they found the newt in the basement 3 days later...the newt was fine..dry, but fine...lol. As long as you don't mind the long term commitment they are a nice little pet.
