Step 1
Create accounts on all of the major job search, business networking, and social networking sites.

Make sure the information on each site is what you want a potential employer to see. This includes a full work history, lists of accomplishments, etc. It does NOT include pictures of your tattoos (unless you're a professional tattoo artist, I suppose), stories about how drunk you got last week, or rants about former employers.

Step 3
Use the special features of each platform to showcase your skills, background, work history, professional relationships, etc.

Step 4
Network with your colleages, former colleages, friends, etc. I prefer to only link with people I actually know somewhat well, but other "open networkers" go for as many connections as they can get.

Step 5
Solicit recommendations from friends, co-workers, former colleagues, etc. I use LinkedIn for this, as their toolset is well-suited to it.
