How to Remove Fuel Odors From Clothing

Gasoline and diesel fumes can permeate fabric, leaving behind an unpleasant, pungent smell. Splashing a bit of fuel on clothing not only leaves behind a possible stain and harsh smell, it can also be very dangerous, making the clothes highly flammable. The first thing to do is remove the clothing and work to remove any fuel and its scent.

Things You'll Need

• Clothesline
• Detergent
• Washer and dryer

Instructions

1. Air-dry the fabric in a safe outdoor location. This will help the fuel to evaporate.

2. Make a paste from the detergent, or use a liquid detergent to spot any area that has a fuel stain. Use detergent-based stain removers, not the solvent-based variety.

3. Wash the clothing in a heavy-duty detergent in hot water. Use cooler water if the fabric will not withstand hot water.

4. Do not put the washed item in the dryer if you can smell any fuel, as fuel is highly flammable. Air-dry again and repeat the washing process. After you no longer smell the fuel, you can place the item in the dryer.
