Step 1
Once released from the hospital, find out what you can and cannot take or use as supplements based on any meds you must take. Know your allergies and keep in mind any limitations these things may put on your choices. Since none of the pain after surgery was anywhere nearly as bad as the pain of having a gall bladder stone firmly stuck in my gall bladder duct, my pain after surgery was very minimal, though that may not be the case for everyone.
-
Step 2
Take an aggressive high quality multivitamin such as the USANA Essentials or Eniva Vibe. Give your body the important building blocks it needs to repair tissue, recover from surgical trauma, antioxidants to detoxify from anesthesia and any other drugs, and immune support. Taking an extra dose of the multivitamin could be necessary.
-
Step 3
As long as you are not taking medications that can interfere (check with your doctor or pharmacist) try the following herbal supplements: Dandelion tea or capsules, Green tea or capsules, Milk Thistle tea or capsules, Turmeric capsules, and Stem Enhance capsules. The Dandelion, Green Tea, and Milk Thistle and Turmeric can be taken 2 to 3 times per day with meals, usually either a cup or 2 capsule. 2 to 4 Stem Enhance capsules can be taken on an empty stomach at least a half hour before meals or 2 hours after meals 3 times per day for best effectiveness.
The Dandelion, Milk Thistle, and Green Tea are all helpful to encourage detoxifying the liver and general liver support. Turmeric encourages support to cope with pain and swelling. The Stem Enhance is helpful in encouraging tissue repair. -
Step 4
To encourage support in recovering from the abdominal soreness, one can also use natural products topically. Emu Oil can be gently rubbed into the abdominal areas around the surgical lacerations and punctures to minimize bruising. To contribute to resisting infection and help cope with pain, Lavender and Chamomile Essential Oil can also be gently rubbed into the skin around the surgical sites until any bandages come off. Then these oils can be rubbed onto the healing surgical sites themselves to encourage skin repair and reduce the tendency of scarring.
-
Step 5
As long as there is no other difficulty with edema or taking medically prescribed diuretics, plenty of distilled water is recommended.
-
Step 6
Lots and lots of rest is recommended.
-
Step 7
Do not pick up anything over 10 pounds. Bending or stooping forward will be very uncomfortable during recovery and should be avoided, though it may lessen daily. Be careful not to pull any abdominal muscles as you will be very stiff and sore, especially in the abdominal area.
-
Step 8
Don’t overeat. A healthy diet of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables is recommended along with lean meats. Using coconut oil in your diet can help encourage your body’s immune system. Eggs, salmon, nuts and plenty of fiber will all play an important part in encouraging your recovery.
