Things You'll Need:
- Just you and your truck
-
Step 1
While pulling out from a stop, gradually apply the throttle. Don't be quick to accelerate. Applying a little less than half throttle and letting the engine accelerate slowly is best.
-
Step 2
Accelerating to about 1,500 rpm should take a few seconds. Doing this quickly is where one loses mpg.
-
Step 3
Slowly shift gears, allowing the engine to die down to almost idling rpm. Then again, slowly accelerate to 1,500 rpm before shifting again.
-
Step 4
Once you've shifted through all your gears and you're at cruising speed on the highway, be sure to stay between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm. This range is where a diesel pickup gets it best mpg. My pickup at 54 mph is at 1,700 rpm. This is slower than most of the traffic on the roads, but will definitely save you money at the pumps. I can usually get an extra 2 mpg just by driving the way I described.
