Step 1
Pay your bills. The most common way the average Joe ends up in court is over unpaid bills. Landlords and credit card companies will eventually sue if you refuse to pay them. So stay on top of your bills and if you get behind, make payment arrangements.
-
Step 2
Get everything in writing. Want to go into business with a friend and split your earnings 50-50? Great! just be sure you both sign a legal contract at the onset. A legal contract that details your agreement will help you avoid a lawsuit in the future. Remember, money changes people. So any time it is involved, you want something in writing to protect yourself from a lawsuit just in case someone gets greedy.
-
Step 3
Obey the law. Think you are an expert driver so it doesn't matter if you drink and drive? Well, you are not alone. There are people who feel the same as you do, who maim or kill people on the roadway each year. Besides causing them to lose their driver's license, it also gets them sued. Therefore, if you want to avoid this kind of situation, you need to obey the law. Don't drink and drive or do anything illegal that could land you in court.
-
Step 4
Settle disputes right away. Have an ongoing feud with a neighbor? if it is reaching a boiling point, it's time to be the bigger man or woman and settle it. Unsettled disputes often cause people to look for ways to sue another person. Therefore, the only way to protect yourself in this kind of situation is to squash it. In other words, keep the peace and stay out of court.

Step 5
Avoid shady characters. We all have opportunities to make friends with people who lack integrity. Yet, it often works against us. If you know someone who engages in illegal activity, he could drag you down with him. Plaintiff attorneys often name everyone in the vicinity of a crime in their lawsuits, even if they are innocent. So the best way to protect yourself from being sued is to keep your distance from anybody you know who could easily end up in jail or court.
