Decorating with crepe paper adds festive results to your celebration. There are ample colors to choose from and you can intertwine them to add a bright and colorful display for almost any occasion, like using red, white and blue streamers for a Fourth of July party. Crepe paper is available from department stores, party stores, craft stores and some drug stores. Drape streamers throughout the room. Cut the crepe paper into even sections of different colors, long enough to reach across the room you are decorating, with swag to it. Tape the colored ends together, up in the corner of one wall, near or at the ceiling. Twist the colored paper together to create a multicolored rope and stretch the streamer across the room. Tape the other end to the opposite corner of the room. Continue creating even swags around the room with the design and colors of your choice.

Use crepe paper to write words. Cut the crepe paper in lengths allowing you to create the letters of your choice. Write the words by taping the crepe paper letters to a wall or poster board. If it is your child's fourth birthday, you could write her name and a "4" on the wall with the crepe paper. This makes for great picture backdrop. You can also find crepe paper that has words written on it, such as "HAPPY BIRTHDAY."

Droop evenly cut, multicolored strips alongside door jambs, twisting them into a rope and taping the ends up at the top and bottom of each side of the door jamb to add cheer to the entrance of a room. Alternatively, cut strips of crepe paper of equal length, tape them to the top of the door frame, evenly spaced, and let them hang down loosely to create a curtain.

Make designs with your crepe paper. You could make flowers by cutting the paper in to 6-inch strips, folding the strips into loops and taping them on to the poster board or wall to look like flower petals. Add short, straight stems with looped green leaves on them, also from the crepe paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach the ends of crepe paper to objects such as walls, light fixtures, curtain rods, windowsills or just about anything that will hold tape.

  • Hang crepe paper from trees when partying outside or from ceiling fan blades for an active display inside.

  • You can make bows for presents, add frill to a table display or even make a windsock.

  • Avoid letting your decorations get wet as this can create a soggy, stained display.
