Christmas Star

A star is a favorite symbol of the Christmas season, representing the Star of Bethlehem, seen by the Magi. This article will show you how to make an outdoor Christmas star to decorate your home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Star Frame with Garland.

    Star Frame with Garland.

Cut 5 sticks, 5 feet long, and nail two of them together 1 inch from the ends to form the top point of the star. Lay a stick across these horizontally, forming a top bar. Attach the remaining sticks to form the rest of the star's points, by nailing their tips together one inch from their ends. Lash the sticks together at all of their crossing positions with nylon zip strips. Attach garland to the star frame with wire or zip strips.

  2. Step 2
    Fasten Lights

    * String lights onto the star by attaching them to the frame with nylon zip strips. Green colored zip strips are best for this. Add enough of the miniature light strings to end up with 3 or 4 rows of lights along each of the 5 sticks in the frame. Thus, you will need about 100 feet of miniature lights.

  3. Step 3

Attach the electric plugs from the light strings into an extension cord. Tie a rope to the top of the star. Begin to hoist the star up a sturdy flagpole, and stabilize it by adding another loop of rope near the bottom of the star causing it to hug the pole. An alternative to using a pole is to carry the star up a ladder and tie it up into a tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use fishing line as guy wires to the bottom points to keep the star on a pole steadier in the wind.
  • Tie the bottom points to branches to stabilize the star in a tree.
  • Use caution when using a ladder.
  • Have a helper handy when hoisting the star up the pole or into the tree.

on 5/29/2009 What a FANTASTIC idea; looks quite simple to make. I'm already imagining where I'll put the star. I need to add the link to this page onto my Outlook calendar so I'll remember to come back around Christmas time.
