Instructions

Gather your vegetables together and wash them under the kitchen faucet. Pat them dry with paper towels. Peel your carrot and cut off the ends. Slice the carrot into quarter-inch pieces and set them in a bowl. Take a wooden skewer and stick one of the carrot pieces on it about two inches down.

Make a radish rose. Cut both ends off of a radish. Make a thin cut on one side of the radish, going no further than half way down the radish's side. Do the same on the other three sides. Place in a bowl of cold water. Setting in cold water will loosen and soften the radish so that its petals open up a bit. To finish the flower, stick the radish rose on a wooden skewer and put back in bowl of water.

Cut the top off of a large turnip. Also cut one side of the turnip so it is flat and won't roll. With the flat side on the cutting board, start cutting the turnip into thin slices. Put the slices into a plastic bag to keep the slices moist. If your vegetables start looking dry while making flowers out of them, fill a spray bottle with cold water and mist them. This can also be done with sweet potatoes, kohlrabi, potatoes and rutabaga.

Arrange each slice from largest to smallest. Make a cut of about ½ inch from the inside to the bottom of five or six of the turnip slices. Take one of the largest slices and gently overlap the two flaps, making a slight bowl. Stick the sharp tip of the skewer through the overlapping flaps of the petal. Gently twist the petal until it comes to rest on the carrot piece. Make another petal and stick it on the skewer opposite of the first. Repeat with the rest of the turnip slices, making sure to alternate where you place the petals.

Add a carrot piece on top of the petals. Stick a radish rose on the carrot piece as the center. You can also use a green or black olive as a center.
