How to Prime Your Swimming Pool Pump
Swimming pool pumps circulate water from the pool to the filter and back again. Over time, air can become trapped in the pump and the flow of water can be interrupted or even reduced. This causes the water to circulate less, creating an environment for algae growth and breeding mosquitoes. Many pumps are "self-priming," meaning the device periodically clears itself of air pockets. When using a pump for the first time or restarting a pump, you'll need to prime it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Switch the pump's power switch to the "Off" position and/or unplug the pump.
-
2
Open the swimming pool pump's transparent lid by hand or with channel locks. Take the lid off slowly as air pressure may be present. Listen for a hissing sound. Wait to remove the lid once the hissing stops.

3
Pull the basket out of the pool pump and empty it. Rinse it off with a garden hose using a nozzle attachment set on a jet-spray setting.
-
4
Close all of the suction lines on the sides of the pump going to the pool with the exception of the main drain line; leave the main drain line open.
-
5
Fill the pump with water using the garden hose, then replace the basket and lid. Turn your swimming pool pump back on and/or plug it back in. Let the water flow through the system for about five minutes.
-
6
Watch the water flow through the transparent lid and look for air bubbles. Wait until the air bubbles disappear and only water is flowing through the pump system, then slowly open the other suction lines to finish and let the pump work as normal.
