How to Open a Stuck CD Drive

A stuck CD or DVD doesn't always require a trip to the local computer shop. Several methods exist to eject a disc from a desktop, laptop or Mac system. Be sure not to try manually forcing the disc out with any objects. In most cases it won't work and will likely damage your computer in the process. The exact method will depend on your hardware, but most computers include at least one method to eject a stuck disc.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu on Windows systems and click the "Computer" or "My Computer" icon. Right-click the drive with the stuck CD. Click the "Eject" option.

    • 2

Power down the computer. Locate a small pin-hole on the front of the CD or DVD drive and press it with a straighten paperclip. The drive will open automatically. This only works with tray drives.

    • 3

Reboot your Mac system if the eject key didn't work. Press and hold the eject key while your Mac starts. The stuck disc should be ejected automatically.

I had no idea that pin hole was even there, let alone what it was for. Thanks!
