The swimming pool pump is the heart of your swimming pool. The electric motor makes the pump run.
Double the running service life of your swimming pool pump by following my easy advice.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • plastic pump cover available at your pool supply store
  1. Step 1

Swimming pool pumps normally run hot, however, the hotter the motor runs the shorter the life of the electric motor and bearings inside. For every 10 degrees above the normal running temperature you lose a year of pump life. Most swimming pool pumps are designed to last 10 years or better!

  2. Step 2

Cover your swimming pool pump from the sun. Baking in the sun while running adds 20-40 degrees of temperature. This extra heat breaks down the insulation in the motor winding and is very hard on the ball bearings.
Anything that will shade the pump will help.

  3. Step 3

Make sure there is adequate air movement around the pump. Water cooling can't do it all! Be sure the air vents in the motor ( at the bottom )are clean and free from dirt, leaves, and critter accumulations of fur, fuzz and other air blocking critter things.

Tips & Warnings
  • Normally you can put your hand on the motor while it's running for a few seconds without much discomfort
  • Don't run the pump without water. If the pump doesn't prime itself within 10 seconds automatically have a pool tech find out why...before the pump turns on one day and never picks up a prime...and then burns out the seal, melts your plastic pipes, and ruins the motor and bearings.
