Whether you're a college student or a kid, sometimes it's the things that seem most obvious to everyone else that are tough. Here's an easy guide on how to crack an egg.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Egg
  • Bowl
  1. Step 1

Prepare a separate dish. Don't crack the egg into the mixture of whatever you're doing, even if it's just going straight into a hot pan. This makes it much more difficult to get out any bits of shell you might leave behind.

  2. Step 2

Place the egg in your palm, and brace your fingers around it so the egg is cupped in your hand firmly, but your fingers aren't covering the bottom of the egg itself.

  3. Step 3

Stabilize a bowl by holding your free hand across the top of it (so it doesn't flip in the next step).

  4. Step 4

With a firm, quick and continuous motion, strike the center of the egg on the rim of the bowl. Do it only once.

  5. Step 5

If the egg split open a little, insert your thumb and pry it open without splintering the shell. If it did not split, repeat step four.

  6. Step 6

If you have any shell bits in the bowl, don't attempt to fish them out with your fingers, because the egg will repel from your finger and the shell will continually get away from you. Use a larger piece of the shell to fish out the shell bit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't crack eggs on the counter. Experienced chefs can do this, if you don't know how to crack an egg already, don't start with a flat surface.
