Training the down command for some people and their dogs can be quite challenging. This article will give owners several resources to train the down command.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog
  • Human :)
  • Treats
  • Comfortable place to sit
  • quiet room
  1. Step 1

Start out in a comfortable area in your house, gather the dog and some treats. Sit in a position on the floor so that your legs are bent but straight out in front of you.

  2. Step 2

Lure the dog over with a treat and place your hand under the bend in your leg, show your dog the treat but don't give it yet...

  3. Step 3

As your dog follows the treat start to draw the treat under your leg, dog should follow. as dog starts to follow the treat under your leg start to push leg down a little (if you can) against your dogs back, this should inadvertently push your dog into a down position.

  4. Step 4

As your dog lays flat give the treat and simultaneously say "Down".
And then praise profusely. Do this many times, practice makes perfect! Also begin to generalize this by practicing in many different rooms in your house!

Tips & Warnings
  • this works best for smaller breeds, especially those who have the tendency to jump on you while you are crouched towards the ground.
  • Use treats like cheese and hotdogs (cut up) they are desirable and more luring for your dog to slip under your leg.
