Choose a Wedding Cake

Choosing a wedding cake seems easy but once you start there are many decisions. Your wedding cake is part of your wedding day decorations.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Magazine Clippings
  • Pen and Paper
  1. Step 1

Collect names of bakeries from family, friends of a wedding directory. Call each bakery to see if they are available first and make an appointment to visit them.

  2. Step 2

Be prepared to put a deposit down if you find a bakery you like. Find out the refund rules in case you change your mind. If there is no refund available make sure this is really what you want.

  3. Step 3

Ask about the cost. Most bakeries charge by how many the cake feeds. Starting around $2.00 per serving and up. The difficulty of your design will also add fees, such as lots of decoration or sugar work.

  4. Step 4

Clear communication of your idea is important. You wont see your cake until your wedding so you want to make sure you communicate your idea well. I suggest you bring in any magazine clipping of cakes you like. The bakery will help you design your cake if you want to mix several together. Make sure to view the bakeries portfolio (this will also help you see their level of complication)

  5. Step 5

Make sure you get to taste all the cake they offer. You want to make sure the cake tastes good too!

  6. Step 6

Choose your frosting carefully. Fondant has a firmer, smoother look but doesn't really taste good. A really good bakery should be able to smooth out butter cream frosting so it looks good and tastes good.

  7. Step 7

If you have a cake topper bring it with you to your consultation. If you are having fresh flowers find out how and when they need them and if they charge to put them on the cake. Sometimes the florist will take of this when they deliver the flowers.

  8. Step 8

If you are concerned talk to the bakery for a discounted practice cake. Even a small two layer cake will show their skill. When you pick up the trial cake make sure that if the table is bumped it doesn't wobble, that the frosting isn't melting. Your decorations are clean, no extra nips, bumps or lumps on your cake. A trial cake will help make you feel comfortable with the bakery and your wedding cake.

  9. Step 9

Don't forget to ask if they offer a free grooms cake. Many bakeries do.

  10. Step 10

Lastly confirm the payment schedule and the delivery time and location with the bakery. And don't hesitate to call them for any reason they are working for you.

  11. Step 11

Make sure your venue can and knows how to cut the cake. If not select a family member to cut the cake (traditional the God Mothers) and have them go to the bakery for cake cutting lessons.

  12. Step 12

Now sit back and relax one more thing to check off your list!

Tips & Warnings
  • Anything can be done for a price.
  • Remember you could do a small cake & then have them make sheet cakes for serving if your budget is tight.
  • Make sure you know prices for each part of the cake.
