How to design a room depends, of course, on which room in your home you're decorating. There are several basic elements of any room design, however. Follow these general steps to expertly design any room in your house! Does this Spark an idea?

1
What room have you chosen to decorate? What is its function? What mood would you like to convey in the room? What objects does the room need in order for it to fulfill your wishes? (For example, let's say you have chosen your livingroom. You'd like it to be warm and kid-friendly, with a traditional theme. Your livingroom needs a large storage cabinet for dvds and media equipment.)
-
2
Your room has three areas to concentrate on - (1) the walls and ceiling, (2) the carpet or flooring and window treatments, and (3) the furniture and accessories. Decide on a color scheme that will encompass all these areas. Four colors are good, but you could have more or less. If you have trouble picking a color scheme, find a fabric pattern or a wall painting that appeals to you and use the colors from that.
-
-
3
Now that you have your color scheme, decide what color your walls, floors, drapes, furniture, and accessories will be. One good color strategy would be to have the walls a light color, the large furniture a medium color, and the accessories a dark or bright color (such as a red lampshade or orange throw pillows).
-
4
Decide on the layout of your furniture. Map out your room on a piece of paper. If any of your current furniture pieces do not fit, consider painting them, altering their appearance, or replacing them.
-
5
Part of designing a room involves determining what is not currently working in your room. Edit anything out of your room that doesn't go with its new design.
-
6
There! Now you've designed your room! Now comes the fun part of purchasing what you need, doing the necessary work to the room (such as painting or building cabinets), and arranging your furniture and accessories!
