Things You'll Need:
- will power
- paper
- pen
- cash
- maybe a computer
- creativity
-
Step 1
First you have to come to the conclusion that you can't do it all. You may want to get the kids the latest game system, the wife a diamond necklace or the husband the new golf clubs and nice presents for all the nieces and newphews, but if your low on cash, it just isn't going to happen. You need to accept reality and move on. Figure out who you really need to buy for and stick to it!
-
Step 2
Make a budget and be realistic about it.
-
Step 3
Use cash instead of credit cards. If you pay with credit cards, you will end up paying much more than it is worth. It is easier to keep yourself out of debt, if you aren't using credit.
-
Step 4
Compare prices. Don't buy the first thing you see unless you KNOW it's an awesome price. Use the computer and compare prices online. Go through the ads carefully to spot good deals.
-
Step 5
Make gifts. If you really need to give to other family members (such as siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins), friends, and neighbors, consider making a gift. Gift baskets, baked goods and gift in a jar are all easily made and can be done inexpensively. Other crafts are also good, if you have the skills to accomplish it.
-
Step 6
Consider drawing names if you have a large family. It may be that other members of your family are feeling cash strapped too. If everyone draws names, then instead of everyone getting a bunch of cheap gifts, they can get one nice one.
-
Step 7
If you are having a Christmas party, make it a potluck. It is so much more affordable if everyone brings something. For your part of the meal, again, make a budget and stick to it. Make your menu around what is on sale and use coupons when you can.
-
Step 8
If you have a LONG list of people you send cards to, this may be the year to cut back. Consider your list carefully. Of course, send to the people you really care about and want to keep in contact with, but many times people continue to send cards to people out of habit.
-
Step 9
If your just starting out and don't have a lot of Christmas decorations, consider making some. Over time you will probably replace many of them, but don't feel like you have to go out and buy them all at once.
-
Step 10
Most of all, make sure you know what Christmas means to you and not get caught up in what you can't do. Have a Merry Christmas!!!
