With the dead of winter fast approaching now is the time to consider a new men's winter coat especially if you were unhappy with the performance of your current winter coat. Men's winter coats have come a long way in style and function in recent years but the tried and true styles and materials, whether down filled, wool or leather are still on top.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to understand is the difference between a jacket and men's winter coats. A jacket rests at the hips and is almost useless when it comes to keeping you warm, as the cold wind can go right up your waste line. Men's winter coats go down to about the knees. Also, it is difficult or impossible to wear a thick sweater under a jacket.

  2. Step 2

You need to consider the style. A huge parka may keep you toasty, but might be a bit inappropriate for the office or a night out on the town. Use the parka for shoveling snow or daily activities, dressier men's winter coats are better for business or pleasure situations. Consider a Pea coat, or officers top coat.

  3. Step 3

The material is important of course. Wool and cashmere are the best at keeping you warm. Cashmere is expensive and not very durable though. Wool men's winter coats preferably with a layer of thinsulate are the best. Leather men's winter coats look great but don't breathe very well, and are sometimes difficult to 'seal' if they have buttons, so keep that in mind.

  4. Step 4

The fit, when you go shopping for men's winter coats wear a sport coat or thick sweater since on the coldest days or at work that's what you'll be wearing. When trying on men's winter coats, move around and check for binding, remember you have to perform in it, whether shoveling the snow or even just tying your shoe, you need to be able to move around in it. Men's winter coats should be comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Remember, when all is said and done, you have to look good, feel good and stay warm! There are many styles and materials of men's winter coats out there so stay open minded and consider your options.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider what you will wear under the coat, leave room for a sweater or sport coat.
  • Leather may look great but does if fit well, does it move with you? Wool and thinsulate are the best for style and comfort.
  • Move around when trying a new coat on. Shoveling snow is NOT the place to discover your coat is too tight!
  • It's hard to look cool wearing a parka and suit, consider two men's winter coats.
