A megapixel is used as a term to describe the number of image sensor elements of a digital camera. Megapixels represents one million pixels. Megapixels are referred to when considering a good camera to take photographs. If you take a photo with only 4 megapixels then you can print out an 8x10 at the largest without losing quality in your picture. Yet, if you have a camera that has 14 megapixels then you can print a photo as large as 18x24. Therefore, the more megapixels in a photograph the larger you can make the picture without losing its quality.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on what you want cropped. In a picture with large megapixels you can crop out uneccessary objects around the main object without losing quality of the photo. For instance, if you have a picture of a person standing in front of a building with other people walking around the building then you may want to crop all of the people around the building.

  2. Step 2

Go to Microsoft Digital Image Starter. This is basic software that will come with most current computers. Click on format and a section will drop down. From this select crop and click on canvas which will appear on the right side.

  3. Step 3

Form the box around the object you want cropped. What remains outside the box will be cut out the picture. In order to crop what you want in the photo make sure that you drap the corners where you want them. Each corner will have a box that you can drag with the mouse. It will always stay in a square shape.

  4. Step 4

Click on done. When cropping the megapixels there will be a vertical box that will appear on the left side of the computer screen. In this box will be two options to either select done or cancel. After selecting done then you will have your new cropped megapixel picture that will appear.

  5. Step 5

Name the file. Once you select file up on the left corner of the screen a drop box will come down and then select save as. Name the file and save it to your pictures or documents.

Tips & Warnings
  • A megapixel will not lose its quality when cropping a photograph unless you try to make the cropped photo into a size larger than 18x24.
