Taking the time to line a valance will give your window treatment a more polished look. It will make a valance fuller and with a crisper look, allowing it to properly hang. Lining a valance also helps protect the valance fabric from sun exposure. This simple lined valance will give your window treatment a professional appearance and you don't need to be a seamstress to achieve success.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Install the hardware and curtain rod 3 inches above your window frame and 2 inches on each side.

  2. Step 2

Measure the width of your window and multiply two to three times. Use this measurement for the width of your valance.

  3. Step 3

Measure from the top of the curtain rod to 18 inches below the top of the window. Add 7 inches to this total. Use this measurement for the width of your valance.

  4. Step 4

Seam together the width of your valance fabric to achieve the width measurement for your valance. Press the seams open.

  5. Step 5

Seam together the width of your lining fabric to achieve the width measurement for your valance. Press the seams open.

  6. Step 6

Lay the valance fabric face up on a flat surface. Place the lining fabric face down on top of the valance fabric. Measure and cut both layers using the valance width and length measurements.

  7. Step 7

Pin the sides of the valance and lining pieces together. Sew a 1/4 inch seam on both sides of the valance.

  8. Step 8

Turn the valance right side out and press the seams.

  9. Step 9

Lay the valance face down on an ironing surface. Fold and press the hem up 1 inch. Fold and press again 2 inches and pin.

  10. Step 10

Sew the hem using a sewing machine and matching thread.

  11. Step 11

Lay the valance face down on an ironing surface. Fold the top edge of the valance down 1 inch and press. Fold and press the edge down again, another 2 1/2 inches and pin for the rod pocket.

  12. Step 12

Sew the rod pocket using a sewing machine and matching thread.

  13. Step 13

Sew a top stitch a 1/2 inch from the rod pocket edge. This will create a ruffle along the top of the valance when placed on the curtain rod.
