How to Make Sheer Window Curtains
Curtains are an integral part of home décor, and sheer curtains are a great way to maximize the amount of light in a room while adding interest, texture and privacy. Making your own requires basic sewing skills. If you can measure and thread a needle, you can create curtains.
Things You'll Need
- Rotary cutting tools or sharp scissors
- Measuring tape
- Sheer fabric
- Needle and thread or sewing machine
- Straight pins
- Iron and ironing board
- Penny or small weight for each curtain
Instructions
-

1
Take measurements. Using the tape measure, take the length from the curtain rod down to where you would like the curtain to hang. Add 9 inches to this number. Measure the width of the window. Double this number. To determine the required yardage for each curtain, take measurements and divide by 36.
-
2
Cut the curtain fabric into the determined dimensions using the rotary tool or scissors. Make sure to cut evenly, and keep the corners squared.

3
Measure and fold 1/4 inch on each side, then fold in an additional 1/2 inch. Secure using straight pins. Next, measure and fold 1/2 inch on top, then fold in another 4 inches. Secure using straight pins. Lastly, measure and fold 1/2 inch on bottom, then fold in another 5 inches, and secure using straight pins.
-
4
Iron all the curtain's hems on a low setting.
-
5
Sew the side hems from top to bottom. Sew the top hem 3 1/2 inches from the fold (this will leave a tube for the curtain rod).
-
6
Slip the penny or small weight into the bottom hem before sewing it 4 1/2 inches from the fold.
-
7
Thread your curtain rod through the top, and hang your new sheer curtains.

Tips & Warnings
It's a smart idea to buy at least a 1/2 yard extra to allow for mistakes or pattern-matching (if required).
