Frosty the Snowman Piñata

Piñatas are a great game idea for any party. Here are step by step instructions for how to create your very own Frosty the Snowman candy filled piñata! Children of all ages will enjoy creating this Frosty the Snowman piñata. They will also enjoy getting their turn at being blindfolded and taking a swing at the bat to release the candy inside the Frosty the Snowman piñata.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 large balloon
  • White flour
  • Water
  • Large spoon
  • Newspaper
  • String
  • Craft paint
  • 1 large sheet of thick black poster board
  • 1 sheet of orange craft foam or construction paper
  • Red & green felt or construction paper
  • Paint brush
  • Packaging tape
  • Hole punch
  • String or fishing line
  • Candy
  • Blindfold and bat or large plastic candy cane(optional)
  1. Step 1
    Inflate balloon

    Inflate balloon

Stretch a large balloon before blowing it up, as it makes it easier to inflate. Blow the balloon as big as possible without busting it. My grandson loved creating this Frosty the Snowman piñata with me.

  2. Step 2
    Tie a knot

    Tie a knot

Tie a knot in the balloon. Take a piece of string or fishing line so that you will be able to hang the balloon to dry after applying the newspaper covered with the wet flour mixture.

  3. Step 3
    Flour & water

    Flour & water

Put 2 cups of water in a large bowl and slowly add flour while stirring with a spoon. Keep adding a little flour at a time and keep mixing with a large spoon until the mixture is slightly thickened.

  4. Step 4
    News paper strips

    News paper strips

Rip strips of newspaper and one strip at a time, put it in the flour and water mixture until covered. Drag the strip of flour and water covered newspaper along the side of the bowl to make sure it doesn't drip too much.

  5. Step 5
    Apply to balloon

    Apply to balloon

Lay each of these flour and water covered strips of newspaper on the balloon. Continue this process until the balloon is completely covered, except for the size opening you will want to leave at the top for filling with candy later.

  6. Step 6
    Double layer

    Double layer

For an extra sturdy Frosty the Snowman piñata, be sure to double layer the balloon. Add extra strips of wet newspaper all around the top where the opening will be. This will help the string hold better when you hang your piñata.

  7. Step 7
    Get ready to pop balloon

    Get ready to pop balloon

Hang the wet piñata where it will be allowed to dry for a couple of days. After the wet newspaper dries completely, take a needle or pin to carefully pop the piñata.

  8. Step 8
    Pinata keeps it's shape

    Pinata keeps it's shape

When the balloon pops, watch out as the pieces fly. Notice that the piñata kept it's shape after the balloon has been popped.

  9. Step 9
    Paint Frosty white

    Paint Frosty white

Paint your Frosty the Snowman with white latex or poster paint. Let it dry for a hour and apply a second coat of paint. Let this dry overnight.

  10. Step 10
    Making the hat

    Making the hat

Cut a long strip of heavy black poster board and glue together to form a 7" in diameter top part of Frosty's hat. Cut a big circle about 14" in diameter for the brim or bottom part of Frosty's hat. In the center of the black circle, cut a 6" in diameter circle. This cut out circle will be inside the top part of the hat when you glue the top to the brim. This is the hole where you put the candy inside the Frosty the Snowman piñata.

  11. Step 11
    Add a little holly

    Add a little holly

With felt or construction paper, you can add a little Christmas holly to Frosty the Snowman's black hat.

  12. Step 12
    Frosty's hat

    Frosty's hat

Set your painted and dried Frosty piñata inside a bowl (this is to steady the piñata) with the opening side up. Apply glue to the underneath part of Frosty's hat all around the 6" in diameter opening and place the hat on Frosty's head, lining the openings up with each other.

  13. Step 13
    Craft foam nose

    Craft foam nose

With an orange sheet of orange craft foam or construction paper, form a carrot shaped nose for Frosty the Snowman's face.

  14. Step 14
    Frosty's carrot nose

    Frosty's carrot nose

Apply glue around the opening of the carrot shaped nose and apply to Frosty's face.

  15. Step 15
    Frosty's eyes

    Frosty's eyes

Out of the scraps of heavy black cardboard, cut two large coal shaped eyes and apply them to Frosty's face with glue.

  16. Step 16
    Frosty's smile

    Frosty's smile

Cut about six smaller coal shaped pieces of the heavy black cardboard and with glue, apply them to create a smile on Frosty's face.

  17. Step 17
    Hole punch

    Hole punch

Cut three 5" pieces of packaging tape and place inside the hat on Frosty's head as a reinforcement where you are going to put the holes for the string. Carefully reach down inside Frosty's hat where the opening is and using a hole punch, make two holes, one on each side. Make the holes as far down as the hole punch will allow.

  18. Step 18
    String for haning

    String for haning

Thread your string or fishing line through the two holes. Make sure to cut your string extra long, as this is how you will hang the candy filled Frosty the Snowman piñata for the children to whack with a bat or a cane.

  19. Step 19
    Fill with candy

    Fill with candy

Fill your Frosty the Snowman piñata with lots of fun candy. It is time to hang the Frosty the Snowman piñata and let the adventure and fun begin. Children of all ages will have fun being blindfolded and getting their chance at whacking the piñata, hoping to break it and freeing all of the candy!

  20. Step 20
    Gather the children

    Gather the children

Gather the children around ready to have some fun! The adults will wish that they were children again just to join in the fun!

  21. Step 21
    Swing at the piñata

    Swing at the piñata

Children will take turns. Draw numbers to see who gets to go first. Blindfold the child, hand them the candy cane or bat and spin them around a few times. Then the fun continues as they get two swings at the Frosty the snowman piñata. Keep letting the children take turns until the piñata busts opwn.

  22. Step 22
    Grab the candy

    Grab the candy

When the piñata finally busts open, out comes the candy and the children will scramble to gather all of the candy. Children of all ages will love the Frosty the Snowman piñata!

Tips & Warnings
  • Using craft glue is good, but it dries much quicker using a hot glue gun.
  • Be sure not to fill the Frosty the Snowman piñata with too much candy, as it will become to heavy and rip the holes where the string is tied.
  • Have adult supervision when the children are using a bat to break the Frosty the Snowman piñata.
