How to Block Incoming Cellular Calls

You can block incoming calls to your regular telephone, but not on the majority of cellular phones. This doesn't mean that you have to just "take it" when you receive an unwanted call. People call you because they want something; whether it's a simple conversation, or your business. For the latter, the trick is to reduce the incentive to dial your number.

Instructions

    • 1

Register for the "Do Not Call registry." Have your cellular phone number and your primary email address handy so that you could receive your registration verification. File a complaint with the "Do not Call Registry" if your cellular phone receives a call 31 days after you register. Know that registration is good for five years.

    • 2

Set your cell phone to forward unanswered calls. Enter your cellular phone provider's call forwarding activation code; type the phone number that'll receive these calls; then press "send." Wait for the forwarding confirmation signal, then press "end." Screen the numbers that display on your phone when you receive calls, and ignore the ones that you're not interested in answering.

    • 3

Use your cell phone service's "number filter" to prevent unwanted callers from reaching you. Adjust the ring tone for each call that you receive so that you know who's calling. Use your phone's silent ringing option for calls that don't match phone numbers from people you normally talk to.

    • 4

Accept the call from the number that you don't want to receive, and inform the person not to call you again. Let him know that you'll report him for harassment if he continues to call you. Contact the police and your phone service if that number calls you again.

    • 5

Invent a fake language, and use that to answer telemarketer and annoying calls. Know that these callers need something from you, usually money; otherwise they wouldn't call. Respond to them with more fake language, especially if they're recording the conversation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Different phone services will have different "call forwarding" steps and options. Check with your phone service's customer service center if you need assistance setting up "call forwarding." Turn your cellular phone and voice mail off when you're near a regular phone, or when you're at locations and functions that prohibit cell phone use. This is the best way to block incoming calls.

  • Don't use these tricks to escape your legal, moral or other responsibilities and obligations. Refrain from using a regular foreign language when discouraging persistent commercial calls. You may end up with a telemarketer who understands the language you're using.
