Volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity Thriftstore

This is an article describing how to volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your area Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store
  • Time
  • Work
  • A form of transportation
  • A telephone
  1. Step 1

Call your local Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store to ask if they need volunteers and what hours would be best if you like, but at the thrift store in my neighborhood, you can go whenever you like.

  2. Step 2

Arrive at the thrift store and sign in to the volunteer sign in book. You have to sign the waiver that is in the book. The thrift stores are usually open Monday through Friday 9AM to 5PM. I like to bring donations with me.

  3. Step 3

Perform duties(i.e. sweep the floor, hang clothing, clean items) as needed. You may want to ask the workers what you can do or what they need the most help with. They will usually assign you a task.

  4. Step 4

Sign out of the book when your volunteer hours are completed. I like to buy things that I see when I am done working. This also provides the Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store with monetary donations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Children's toys are usually in high demand for donations.
  • This is an excellent place to donate used household items because this is where the new Habitat for Humanity home owners can acquire things to start up their homes.
  • This is a great place to do community service!
  • Hours in the thrift store also count as "sweat equity" hours for the Habitat for Humanity.
  • Always wear closed toed shoes to work in.
