Although it is doubtful that butterflies actually inhabit butterfly "houses", these houses can be very attractive and add to the distinction of a butterfly garden. Because butterflies may use a house to get out of a storm, hide from a predator, or simply spend the night you should place a layer of leaves and twigs in the house to simulate the natural areas in which butterflies rest and hide out. Surround your butterfly house with food and nectar plants and a water source and you may enjoy the sight of different butterflies visiting your garden and butterfly houses.

Place your butterfly house in an area of your garden that has been filled with plants that are butterfly food and nectar sources. Your butterfly house can add visual beauty to the garden and may just house a butterfly or two during the summer season.

Maintain your butterfly house by periodically cleaning out the debris inside and providing new leaves and twigs. However, you must be careful doing this because you may have a guest in the butterfly house that you do not want to disturb.
