Make your bed.

For some people, keeping a room neat and clean can be a challenge. For those people, a system of organization must be in place in order for a room to be kept neat.

Step 1

Clean your room completely. Organize it from top to bottom, including cleaning out drawers, organizing clothes, and arranging trinkets and decorations.
Step 2

Look at the room that you've just cleaned. Hopefully you like it, since you just arranged it. Make it a goal to keep it looking like this in the future. Remind yourself that you want your room to be presentable if people come over at any time.
Step 3

Allow yourself to have a hidden junk box. Some people prefer a junk drawer, but a box is more portable, and can be easily hidden. So, if you have lots of random stuff, put it in the box, so it stays out of the way of your important things.
Step 4

Get out of the habit of leaving junk, cups, and other random things around your room. Once you have one empty cup sitting around, what's your motivation to not put down more, until you practically have a whole table full of cups? The easy way to not do this is not allow yourself to start doing this.
Step 5

Don't buy more things than you need. Your room may have a theme, but you don't need to buy everything possible in that theme because your room will look cluttered and messy.
Step 6

Get a large laundry basket. Overflowing laundry baskets look messy. If you can't get a new laundry basket, make sure to do your laundry when it needs it.
Step 7

Don't leave personal items out in the open. Sanitary napkins, cat toys and your childhood blanket are not decorations.
Step 8

Make your bed. This simple step will make your room look much better.
