unit price a can of soup

Marketing strategies can make saving money confusing

Beware! Marketing strategies try to confuse you. Let's do some simple math do determine the best UNIT PRICE.

    • 4

To find the unit price for each can, take the price and divide it by the number of units there are. So for our regular size can of soup we would solve: 1.50/10=0.15 That means each ounce costs 15 cents. Compare that to the family sized can: 3.00/15= 0.20 That means each ounce costs 20 cents.

Compare your unit prices. In this example, the better value is the regular size can. Do not be fooled by advertising!

Yes! Some stores will break down the unit price for you on the price tag, but others won't. A calculator is handy for figuring the unit price too, especially when you need to save time on a larger shopping trip. Great idea!
