How to Reglaze a Bathtub
Reglazing a bathtub is done when it is old and worn. Instead of replacing a tub that could cost almost $1,000, it is less expensive to reglaze it. Reglazing the bathtub is also referred to as refinishing or resurfacing. In order to reglaze the tub, be sure to have plenty of ventilation from the fumes of the chemicals used as well as time. Things You'll Need
- Industrial cleaner
- HVLP Turbine sprayer
- Waterproof body filler
- Aerospace epoxy primer
- Masking tape
- Sander or sandpaper
- Scraper
- Aerospace two component
- Goggles
- Gloves

Strip off existing coating, if any. This coating was applied by the factory when the bathtub was bought. Use a scraper to get any remaining coating off. Rinse off the tub. Sand the tub while still damp.

Clean the surface of the bathtub with an industrial cleaner. Any Interlube or Krylon brand of industrial cleaner will work. This will help clean off dirt and stains.

Repair the surface of the bathtub with waterproof body filler. You can use Clausen Claw Glass body filler. Then sand the bathtub again until it is smooth. Cover the area around the tub with clear plastic and masking tape in order to prevent it getting sprayed with chemicals.

Remove all dirt and dust from the bathtub. You can wash the tub down or use more industrial cleaner. Apply three coats of Aerospace epoxy primer. Spray it on by using HVLP turbine sprayer. Wait 15 minutes between each coat. After last coating, wait another 15 minutes before going to the next step.

Apply four coats of Aerospace two component aliphatic acrylic urethane topcoat. This will also be sprayed on with the spray gun. Wait 15 minutes between each coating.

Wait 24 hours for the bathtub to dry completely. Glazing the bathtub will take up to 4 hours, but it is necessary to wait an additional 24 hours before using the tub again.
