Simple syrup is just what it claims to be: a syrup that is simple to make and very versatile. It can be used to sweeten iced tea or coffee, mixed in alcoholic drinks, or used in many dessert and fruit recipes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups plain sugar
  • 1 cup water
  1. Step 1

Put the sugar and water into a small pot over medium heat. Begin stirring. I like to use a wooden spoon for this.

  2. Step 2

Once the sugar is mixed in well, and there isn’t a sugar mountain on the bottom of your pot, turn the heat up to high. Bring it to a boil.

  3. Step 3

Boil for 3 to 5 minutes, until you can no longer see the sugar granules. Take the pot off the heat and let it cool completely before you use it. It can be stored in an airtight container in your fridge for 2 to 4 weeks. You can also easily halve this recipe if you don’t need this much.

Tips & Warnings
  • don't leave the syrup unattended on the stove, you don't want it to burn or boil over.

on 12/10/2008 I live in Maple syrup country. It just doesn't get any better than this! I guess you could even add flavors to this simple syrup. Good article.
