Prevent Your Dogs From Going Over The Fence

Do you have a dog that keeps jumping the fence and leaving your yard? Would you like to prevent him from doing this without raising the height of your fencing? As the owner of two siberian huskies, I have come to appreciate how easily some dogs can leave the yard when that "need to run" takes over. This is one method that you can use to keep your pup safely in your yard. It is supposed to imitate the action of a rolling pin... when your dog puts his paws on the PVC pipe along the top of the fence, the pipe will spin and he will have nothing to grab onto.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1-inch PVC pipe
  • 3-inch PVC pipe
  • angle irons/corner brackets... one for every 5 feet of fence
  • lead masonry anchors... two per bracket
  • steel wire rope
  • wire anchor locks with bolts (for locking down the ends to keep the wire taut)
  • power drill
  • power screwdriver
  • hack saw
  • bolt cutters
  • box wrench for tightening the bolts
  1. Step 1

You will need to mount brackets along the fence, about 4 feet apart... for brick fencing, mount them on top of the wall; for wrought iron or wood fencing, mount them on the side facing into the yard.

  2. Step 2

Cut the PVC pipes to fit within the brackets, leaving 1/4 inch of space on either side. Layer a 3-inch piece of PVC pipe over each 1-inch piece of PVC pipe.

  3. Step 3

Thread the wire through the first bracket, then through the first set of PVC pipe, then through the next bracket. Continue this along the entire length of fencing.

  4. Step 4

Pull the wire taught at both ends and lock it down. The PVC should spin around the wire like a rolling pin.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can have the PVC pipe cut for you at your local hardware store, which will eliminate the need for the hack saw.
  • Make sure your drill is powerful enough to drill through your fencing material.
  • Be careful when working with power tools!
