Troubleshoot a Dell 1700 Laser Printer

If your Dell 1700 Laser Printer is not working properly, or perhaps at all, you are probably very frustrated--and understandably so. Whether you are trying to print holiday cards or a report that was due yesterday, you need your printer to work ASAP. Before you pull out your hair or throw in the towel and run to the nearest print shop, try these troubleshooting tips. Your printing problem might not be as bad as it seems.

Instructions

    • 1

Reboot your computer. This is especially important if your printer suddenly stopped working. Sometimes a simple reboot is all that is needed. Turn off the printer prior to restarting and don't turn it back on until your computer is fully up and running.

    • 2

Remove the toner cartridge and put it back (or try installing a new one). Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord and leave the printer unplugged for about 10 minutes. Plug the cord back in and power up. This should work if your "Error" and "Toner" lights are both flashing.

    • 3

Check your printer settings. Click "Start," point to "Settings" and choose "Printers/Faxes" to make sure your Dell 1700 is set as your default printer. If not, right-click on it and select "Set as Default."

    • 4

Uninstall and reinstall the printer. To uninstall, go to the "Printers/Faxes" window again. Right-click the Dell 1700 and choose "Delete." Choose "Yes" if you are asked if you want to delete related files. Stay in the "Printers/Faxes" window, select "Add a Printer" and click "Next." Choose "Local Printer" and follow the steps to reinstall.

    • 5

Make sure you have the most current print driver installed. Go to Dell's website and click on "Support." Select "Drivers and Downloads," then click on "Select Model." Click on "Printers" and choose the 1700 from the list. Follow the instructions to download the most current driver.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Dell 1700 is experiencing recurring jams or failing to pick up paper, you probably need a new fuser. Contact a Dell supplier for a replacement part.
