How to Turn Off Closed Captioning on a Comcast Motorola DVR

Closed Captioning
Closed Captioning

Closed captioning makes it possible for people who are hard of hearing to enjoy their favorite television programs. It is also a handy feature for televisions located in a public setting, like in a doctor's office. But, what if you don't have any hearing problems and your television suddenly begins broadcasting with the closed caption on the screen?

If you find that the closed captioning feature on the TV is off and it is still working, the problem is with your Comcast cable box (if you have their service). This can be frustrating-but it pales in comparison to trying to find what caused it to come on in the first place. All frustrations aside-here is how you can turn the closed captioning off on a Comcast DVR.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comcast remote
  1. Step 1

Familiarize yourself with your Comcast remote. Look over the buttons and locate the ones that read: "Cable," "Power" and "Menu."

  2. Step 2

With your Comcast DVR remote in your hand, aim it at the cable box (not the TV). Press and release the "Cable" button and then press and release the "Power" button. You should see your DVR's display go off.

  3. Step 3

Acting quickly, press and release the "Menu" button. This should bring up an on-screen menu. If it doesn't work, try it again. You do have to hit the menu button quickly after you turn the cable box off.

  4. Step 4

Once you have the User Setting screen on the TV, look toward the bottom of the list. Here you should see "Closed Captioning." Use the up and down buttons to scroll down to this area so that closed captioning is highlighted.

  5. Step 5

Change the setting from ON to OFF.

  6. Step 6

Turn the DVR power back on, and in a few minutes the box will restore itself and you can enjoy watching your programs without the pesky, word-filled black box.

on 3/7/2009 Oh wow, I cannot thank you enough for this. I've had to watch TV with the caption pretty much right in the middle of the screen for about 3 months now. I can't explain how annoying it was. On top of that, my incompetent service provider had no idea how to get it off and kept telling me over and over that it was some kind of setting with my TV that was the problem, when I knew that wasn't the case. Anyway I stumbled across this article and in ten seconds I had it off. You are a godsend. Thank you so much!!
