1
Wet your hair to make it easy to manage and cut. Towel-dry after wetting --- you don't want it soaked and dripping. Fill a spritzer bottle with water for when your hair starts to dry during the process. Curly hair pulls up as it dries, so keep that in mind when cutting.

2
Comb out all remaining knots and tangles. Consider using some leave-in conditioner to keep your hair soft and manageable.

3
Trim the ends. Find your hair's natural parting and start snipping away the split ends. Take small sections and work your way around the head. Pull the hair through your fingers and cut a straight line.

4
Style your hair. If you have chosen to keep your hair at one length all over, then you only need to tidy up the ends a little more until it's all a straight line. For layering, take the top section of your hair and, working from the front to the back, cut the ends shorter. Clip that section out of the way and start on the next layer. You can do this three or four times until you have the desired layered look. If you're going for an angled look, hold your fingers and scissors at a slant.

5
Ensure the hair is even. Grab sections from the sides of your head and pull down toward your chin. If you reach the ends at the same time with both hands, then it's even. Check various areas of your head to ensure it's even all over. Extra trimming might be required to finish up.

Look at your hair from all angles with two mirrors --- one in front and one behind. Make sure you're happy with how it looks from every direction.
