How to Read Body Language

Body language may be your powerful tool in understanding what is in the mind of a person. Understanding the body language of other people may give you a social advantage over other people. Here are the different body languages and the different messages they convey.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Overly tilted head is a sign of sympathy and at the same time is trying to convince the other of the person’s honesty.

  2. Step 2

If the head is lowered down, it shows uncertainty. The person might be guilty, or shy, or just distant.

  3. Step 3

Cocked head with the exception of other cultures that see this as a sign of respect may mean that the person is challenging you. This may depend however on the movement of the eyebrow, or mouth.

  4. Step 4

Those whose eyes always look away might be hiding something, or simply lying. Although other cultures do not encourage looking straight in the eye for this may mean disrespect.

  5. Step 5

People who look away when listening to you might be thinking of something else. Side-looking may mean guilty.

  6. Step 6

Dilated pupils are showing interest and excitement. Mirroring is a sign that he is interested to you.

  7. Step 7

People with crossed hand seem not interested.

  8. Step 8

People who put their arms in their pockets are confident and interested.

  9. Step 9

If they rest their hands behind their neck it means openness for discussion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gestures like biting the lips, fiddling with hair, playing with the glasses, or brushing the hair back may signal nervousness.
  • The feet may also convey a message. A fast tap, a fast shifting of weight might mean excitement, nervousness or intimidation. A slow shift of weight may signal discomfort.
