Step 1
Determine the length of your rental or leasing agreement. Most contracts specify a particular length of time, generally 1 to 3 years. It is easy to cancel after the term of the agreement has passed. If you seek to cancel before your lease or rental period is up, it will be more difficult.
-
Step 2
Read the clause regarding the specifics of canceling the agreement. Most contracts outline a process that must be followed for cancellation. For example, you must give the landlord at least 30 days written notice before the contract will be terminated.
-
Step 3
Write your landlord a letter detailing your rental or lease cancellation. Include the date you will be vacating the premises as this is the date the agreement is effectively terminated. Sign and date the letter.
-
Step 4
Make a photocopy of your written notice for your records. You definitely want proof that you submitted notice in accordance with the agreement's requirements.
-
Step 5
Contact the landlord if you wish to cancel your agreement before its expiration date. While you are technically liable for the entire period of the agreement, most landlords will be willing to work with you on the issue. For example, if they are able to fill the space with a tenant, you will be off the hook. You will, however, likely have to pay rent until a new tenant occupies the premises.
