How to Fly Fish for Catfish

A beloved sport by people all over the world, fly-fishing offers an artistic and adventurous method to catch fish. Fly-fishers use flexible fly-fishing rods to cast their imitation flies into the water. Though most people think of catfish as scavengers, they are actually predatory, so they respond well to flies and lures. Although general fly-fishing techniques always apply, there are additional things you can do if you are fly-fishing for catfish.

Instructions

    • 1

Fish for catfish in warm weather. Catfish like warm water, so you are more likely to find them in rivers and streams rather than cooler ocean water.

    • 2

Target structured areas. Catfish like water that is structured by trees, boulders, edges, points and logs. Be aware of these obstacles as you cast your fly to avoid snagging on them.

    • 3

Aim to fish in areas with clear water. Catfish have excellent eyesight, so target water with good clarity.

    • 4

Use a weighted, wet fly rather than a dry fly. Catfish tend to be bottom-feeders, so you'll have more luck with a wet or weighted fly.

    • 5

Choose natural flies that are free of dyes. Catfish have keen senses of smell, so they may smell any chemicals used in dyed flies.

    • 6

Wear waders and fish in the water rather than from the shore. Catfish have excellent hearing, so they may be scared away by your movement on the shore. Tread softly as you move in the water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose flies that match the coloring of the local food sources.

  • Avoid getting insect repellent, sunscreen or other chemical-based products on your flies. The smell can scare away catfish.
