Step 1
Choose flattering clothing, makeup, and a hairstyle. Even if you are only taking a headshot, the clothing is still important. Choose a shirt that will bring out your eyes or will flatter your upper body.
-
Step 2
Lighting is very important. If you are taking the picture outdoors, morning and evening sunlight is the most flattering. If indoors, you will have to experiment with different lighting to figure out which one works best for you. A room with soft lighting works best for most people. The flash on the camera can make you appear washed out sometimes, but it is usually good at hiding your acne if you have it.
-
Step 3
Find your angle. Do you have a side of your face that you like to take pictures from better than the other? This is usually the side that your hair is parted on, if it is not parted in the middle. A generally flattering angle is slightly above the head, with the head turned slightly to the side.
-
Step 4
If you can look in a mirror while taking the picture, you will be able to see the picture (on a digital camera/cell phone) on the camera and get the angle just right. It will look better if you don't see your arm in the picture.

on 12/7/2008 Interesting, I'll have to try this. I don't consider myself photogenic at all!

on 12/7/2008 Thanks for the tips! My pics of myself are always horrible, and from your article I can see several reasons for that now!
